Certification Overview

Certification Overview

BEAG certification is an independent, evidence-based assessment of bakery equipment designs mapped to the ANSI/ASB Z50 standard. This page explains who should apply, what is covered, the process, and how to prepare.

Who should apply

  • OEMs: Manufacturers seeking to demonstrate hygienic and safety design rigor for specific equipment models or systems.
  • Component suppliers: When components are critical to hygienic performance and fall within the applicable program scope.

Program scope

BEAG certification covers equipment. BEAG does not certify facilities or perform facility assessments.

  • Individual machines and unit operations
  • Integrated subsystems and assemblies
  • Defined model families with controlled variants

See examples and scope definitions on Program Types.

What we assess

Assessments map to applicable Z50 criteria and are based on documented evidence and structured design review.

  • Materials of construction and surface finish
  • Cleanability and access to product and nonproduct contact surfaces
  • Hygienic design of fasteners, joints, guards, and enclosures
  • Ingress protection and water management where relevant
  • Product and allergen cross contact risk controls
  • Documentation, drawings, manuals, and sanitation procedures

Details appear in Requirements and Checklists and the Z50 overview.

Certification outcomes

  • Certification decision: Issued to the applicant when criteria are met and evidence is verified.
  • Scope statement: Certificate includes the certified model or assembly identification and any conditions of use.
  • Corrective actions: If nonconformities are found, a findings report is provided with a path to closure.
  • Validity and maintenance: Certificates are time bound and require annual review. Equipment design changes require revalidation.

Timeline at a glance

  1. Register: Register your company and pay the fee of $545 USD annually.
  2. Choose Certification Path: Determine how your equipment will be assessed. BEAG offers either an Internal Equipment Conformance Evaluation program or companies can choose a Third-Party Conformance Evaluation.
  3. Assessment: Structured review of evidence and design against Z50 criteria.
  4. Findings and closure: Address any corrective actions and submit objective evidence.
  5. Certification: Certificate and scope statement issued upon closure of findings.
